Prepared Environment

“The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as it is possible, to render the growing child independent of the adult.”

- Maria Montessori, The Secret of Childhood, 1966
The Prepared Environment is unique to the Montessori Method of Education. The calm, well-ordered environment allows for movement and activity and facilitates independent learning and exploration. Children are active participants in their learning as they are free to choose and work on activities at their own pace. Here, children experience a combination of freedom and self-discipline, as guided by this rich environment. Uncluttered and well-maintained, the environment is both beautiful and inviting.

The Prepared Environment is designed to meet the needs of each individual child at different stages of development. The child-sized furniture, shelves and materials allow the children opportunity to do for themselves what otherwise would only be accomplished with the aid of an adult. The consistency and order of the environment promotes independence and self-confidence and enhances problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

At each level of development (Toddler Community 18 months- 3 years, Primary 3-6 years, Elementary 6 – 12 years) the Prepared Environment grows with the child and encourages the child to explore and seek challenges for themselves.
