Elementary

(6 – 12 years)
The elementary program builds on the strong foundation started within the primary classroom. As the child grows and their needs change so does the prepared environment. The elementary program is designed to respond to the universal characteristics of elementary-age children, including:

Curiosity and creative imaginations

Once again the class is a mixed age environment for children between the ages of 6 to 12 years old, providing many opportunities to participate in the class as both learners and teachers. With the use of the Montessori materials and other resources children meet age appropriate curriculum standards while exploring their own interests.

Ability to think abstractly and use logic and reason

Elementary children are expected, at a minimum, to master the components of the public school curriculum. In addition, children at this age have unlimited opportunities to explore their interests in depth and experience the thrill of discovery.

Desire to increase their social skills and work with others

With a strong sense of themselves as individuals, children at the elementary level work together as a community gradually becoming more and more responsible for themselves, each other and the larger society. Lessons in subject areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, geography, history, science and grammar are presented in small groups and individually. Art, music, and language are integrated seamlessly into the children’s daily work.

Strong sense of fairness and justice

Children are encouraged to extend their lessons beyond the classroom and research projects by engaging in their community, utilizing libraries, museums, natural surroundings and local businesses. Elementary children regularly plan their own “going outs” to find answers to their research questions and to serve the community in ways that have personal meaning.
